Don't Hesitate to Use Joomla Just Because It's Free

from:

Some of us worry when we hear that Joomla is free software. We are so used to paying big bucks for software that we can't believe anything good would be free. We've all been raised to think that there's no such thing as a free lunch. Joomla is convincing even the most cynical folks that free software is excellent.

Sometimes when business people hear that Joomla and Joomla extensions are free, they worry that means they are getting something that's not as good as something that costs a lot. On the contrary, Joomla is an amazing story of people around the world working together to ensure that open source (free) technology is outstanding. It's hard to comprehend that this is even possible, but it is truly happening. When a company selects information technology, they are willing to pay for reliability because businesses can not afford downtime and errors. The great news is that Joomla is incredibly reliable and efficient.

The truly amazing thing about Joomla is that any web site can be quickly switched to Joomla so that non-technical people can handle content management easily. This is a technological break through that has big implications for businesses that use the web. Content management is critical to the success of

any business that uses the web.

In 2008, Joomla 1.5 was released with great success. Some of the best IT people on earth are involved in ensuring the excellence of Joomla. The first Joomla developer summit is being held this winter in Australia. Work on Joomla 1.6 is ongoing and some terrific features are being added. One feature of 1.6 will be to make it easier to install and manage Joomla extensions. There are an incredible number of Joomla extensions being developed constantly, and 1.6 will make enable the most efficient use of them.

Another feature of 1.6 will be improvement of access control in the Administrator. This will give the ability to create new user groups with different access levels. It will be possible to have more groups than public, registered and special. For example, you could create staff and management access levels with certain capabilities. There will be more variety in the the rules that allow you to control what different user groups can do. This will greatly increase flexibility in web site administration.

This kind of innovation in the Joomla software is constant. You do not have to pay extra for new new versions as you do with word processing, for example. The same is true for the Joomla extensions. Developers are constantly creating new extensions that give you all kinds of flexibility and efficiency in how you operate. This kind of innovation is totally unique to Joomla. It is an exciting phenomenon not only for users but for the developers who are involved.

So don't hesitate to use Joomla just because it's open source. You are taking advantage of cutting edge technology that is being used by businesses everywhere around the globe.
